On January 30, another shock occurred in the English Premier League – the police of Greater Manchester arrested 20-year-old Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood, who is accused of raping and causing bodily harm to a girl named Harriet Robson. The 32-year-old midfielder is accused of sexual crimes against minors (in other words, pedophilia). And although after his arrest, he, like Greenwood, was released on bail, in the camp of “taffy” the reaction was immediate – the Icelander was removed and his future career in football is under a huge question.
We must not forget the case of Manchester City left-back Benjamin Mendy, who is also not up to football these days. At the moment, the Frenchman is charged with participation in at least eight episodes of sexual violence, and this player spent 134 days behind bars before he was also released on bail in January of this year until the final verdict of the court was announced.
In fact, such cases, alas, are not uncommon in modern football. Many players who get to the top level simply lack the intelligence and education, not to mention high moral standards, to properly behave in society. Easy money falling on them at a “tender age” leads to the formation of false, if not perverted, values and outlooks on life. A number of footballers simply believe that they are allowed in this world, if not everything, then almost everything, and any responsibility can be trivially paid off or deftly evaded with the help of legal loopholes.
